University of Frankfurt

Area of expertise: CPE, Household debt, Banking, Tax state

Daniel Mertens has recently investigated the politics and institutional foundations of household debt in Germany within a comparative capitalism framework, making the case for a stronger recognition of personal credit in Political Economy scholarship (Mertens 2015, 2017a, 2017b). He is further interested in the politics of the tax state, particularly under conditions of fiscal austerity (Streeck/Mertens 2013) and democratic impasses in the European Union, as well as development banking (Mertens/Thiemann 2017), linking them to contemporary theoretical innovations in Political Science around the concepts of ‘market-based banking’ and ‘growth models’.
