Jan Fichtner’s research interests lie in the interdisciplinary field of International Political Economy, particularly Global Finance. He has published a number of peer-reviewed articles on the subject of hedge funds – on the role of offshore financial centers, on inequality and the rise of hedge funds, and on the function of hedge funds as agents of change for financialization (2013, 2014, 2015a). Subsequently, he has broadened his focus to work on the structural power of the Anglophone countries and jurisdictions in global finance (2016). Recently, he has begun researching the re-concentration of global corporate ownership and control in the context of his position as the head of a subproject of CORPNET at the University of Amsterdam. The first result is a publication that for the first time shows the unprecedented concentrated ownership of publicly listed US companies in the hands of the “Big Three” passive asset managers BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street (Fichtner et al. 2017).
