Michael Beggs research concentrates on the evolution of economic policy. His recent book is a history of macroeconomic policy in Australia. It focuses on counter-inflation strategy as something that transformed state involvement in many aspects of the modern capitalist economy: money and finance, the labour market, fiscal policy and foreign exchange. He is currently working on a grant-funded project to study the relationship between financial innovation and central banking in China. His interests include the history of monetary theory and policy, post-Keynesian economic theory, Marxian state theory and economic sociology.
